Thoughts from my Car

Every so often I’ll be sitting in the car doing nothing, and a set of words will hit me so deeply and profoundly I’ll have to write them down. Some (with the asterisks) are quotes I’ve heard that I’d like to expand on, others just fell into my lap and fit together in an unexpected way that I expect to write a longer piece about in time. I am inclined to share, as they are beautiful and strange and well worth documenting for the future.

Here they are:

  1. As the waves formed and fell in front of me and Josh Turners' words echoed through my soul, I felt love.
  2. Today the clouds dance to a slow tune.
  3. It occurred to me that the fish was not defined, its edges blurred with the fringes of my reality
  4. The light comes out of the faucet
  5. On engineering luck
  6. If you watch closely, you’ll encounter the drama of the hunt as a shark swims softly along the water's edge.

The red tide mulls the sea and the reality is diluted by matte grey clouds that wouldn’t dare allow light through. The water is flat and looks like blood, dyed by the algae that have been killing the sand crabs. It could be a nightmare and it could be a daydream. It is beautiful and terrifying, and it is real. A fin slides through the water, uninterrupted by waves and wind, and passes through a row of surfers, unbothered by their fear. He knows they don’t belong here. He also knows he doesn't need them. He lives his life without remorse or greed. He is pure in his actions. But he is a shark that hunts the red seas. I fear him.

7. I have felt this pain before. This unfairness, this mourning, this deepest of sorrows. Not at loss of life, but loss of soul.

8. Dark and Light exist, always. That is balance. Duality gives us contrast.*

9. I’m not a renaissance man, I’m a many hat guy.

10. The people who move are the ones who don’t.*

11. Potential on the Horizon

12. An entire ocean in my room
